The Anatomy of Art is a field guide for artists working in dance, theatre and performance. Twelve interrelated drivers of the creative process – including Time, Space, Relationship, Meaning, and Context & Culture – form a working map for inquiry. Through more than 1,000 questions, scores and frameworks, the book activates rehearsal, teaching and performance, keeping choice alive in the body. The book draws on three decades of devised dance and theatre and supports creative work of any scale that calls for bravery, personal vision and rigorous inquiry. It can be opened anywhere and used for a few minutes in the studio or throughout the life of a project. A preface by Marisa Tomei and short offerings from artists across three generations – including Bebe Miller, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Deborah Hay, Emanuel Gat, and others – add pressure, contrast and lived intelligence.
- Susan Bauer
Susan Bauer presents a pioneering introductory, student-centered program in somatic movement education. Designed for educators, therapists, counselors, and movement practitioners, The Embodied Teen offers 50 activities in somatic movement education, along with concrete pedagogy tips and engaging anecdotes drawn from her decades of working with youth in the US and abroad.
The curriculum teaches teens how to integrate body and mind, enhance their kinesthetic intelligence, and develop the inner resilience they need to thrive, now and into adulthood. Students learn the basics of anatomy and physiology, and unlearn self-defeating habits that impact body image and self-esteem. By examining their cultural perceptions, they discover their body prejudices, helping them to both respect diversity and gain compassion for themselves and others. Concise and accessible, the lessons presented in this book will empower teens as they navigate the volatile physical and emotional challenges of this vibrant, powerful stage of life.
- Elizabeth Shea
Movement plays a fundamental role in human life, shaping how we think, communicate, and engage with ourselves and our surroundings. Somatic practice, which focuses on deepening the relationship between body and mind, offers a framework for understanding the human experience. This book examines the theoretical foundations of somatics and introduces SomaLab®, a system designed to support integrated mind-body learning. The book contextualizes somatic experience by exploring how humans learn, regulate, and respond to different environments. Practical applications—designed across educational, artistic, and community contexts—are offered for dancers, musicians, and others who use movement as a means of expression, interaction, or connection.
“- Luc Vanier
Everyone can have their own movement practice. Building on Dance and the Alexander Technique, Luc Vanier, Rebecca Nettl-Fiol, and Elizabeth Johnson present an innovative method for observing and analyzing movement in daily life, the performing arts, and therapeutic contexts. The authors’ Framework for Integration is a multifaceted approach to understanding and refining human movement. Core principles—such as psychophysical unity, developmental movement, and attention to breath—reveal how small changes in awareness and intent transform activities ranging from yoga and Tai Chi to sitting meditation, from gardening and sports to playing a musical instrument. Real-world applications highlight how individuals of all abilities and ages can reduce pain, improve coordination, and discover more efficient, joyful movement. Guest contributors detail how these concepts enhance artistic expression, interventions for trauma or chronic pain, and everyday tasks like driving and housework. Engaging and aimed at non-specialists, The Dance of Everyday Movement invites practitioners from all walks of life to embrace ongoing development, resilience, and a more embodied way of living.
In Mindful Movement, exercise physiologist, somatic therapist, dance educator and advocate Martha Eddy uses original interviews, case studies and practice-led research to define the origins of a new holistic field – somatic movement education and therapy – and its impact on fitness, ecology, politics, health, education and performance. The book reveals the role dance has played in informing and inspiring the historical and cultural narrative of somatic arts – approaches to consciousness based in the awareness of the soma, the living body. Providing an overview of the antecedents and recent advances in somatic study and with contributions by diverse experts, Eddy highlights the role of Asian movement, the European physical culture movement as well as the language of neuroscience and their relationship to the performing arts, and female perspectives in developing somatic movement, somatic dance, social somatics, somatic fitness, somatic dance and spirituality, and ecosomatics. Mindful Movement unpacks and helps to popularize awareness of both the body and the mind.

This book captures the breadth of methodological approaches to research in dance in the fine arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences by bringing together researchers from around the world writing about a variety of dance forms and practices.
This book makes explicit the implicit skills and experiences at work in the research processes by detailing the ethics, orientations, and practices fundamental to being a researcher across the disciplines of dance. Collating together approaches from key subdisciplines, this book brings together perspectives on dance practice, dance studies, dance education, dance science, as well as dance research in cross-, multi-, and interdisciplinary fields. Practice-based chapters cover methodological approaches that provide rich examples of how research design and implementation are navigated by practicing scholars. Dance Research Methodologies also includes a practical workbook that helps readers to decide upon, refine, and enact their research, as well as develop ways in which to communicate their process and outcomes.
This vital textbook is a valuable resource for research faculty interested in interdisciplinary conversation and practice, emerging scholars honing their methodological approaches, graduate students engaged in research-based coursework and projects, and advanced undergraduates.
