Lea Marshall’s writing has appeared in Imagining: A Gibney Journal, The Atlantic, Dance Magazine, Dance Teacher, Dance International, WomenArts, Richmond’s Style Weekly, Charlottesville’s C-ville Weekly, and National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Her poetry has appeared in Attached to the Living World: A New Ecopoetry Anthology, Rogue Agent, JAMA, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Diode, Thrush, and elsewhere. Her first book, The Slow Hammer of Roots, was published by Broadstone Books in 2025. Marshall most recently served as Director of Research for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)’s School of the Arts. She worked as a producer and arts administrator for over 20 years, serving as co-founder and Executive Director of Ground Zero Dance, and as associate chair of VCU’s Department of Dance + Choreography. She served on the board of the American College Dance Association and as an accreditation site visitor for the National Association of Schools of Dance. She currently works as a grant writer and lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.
