Choreographing for the screen is far more than simply filming a stage performance. This creative work requires a unique approach blending movement, camera work, and visual storytelling.
In this course, dance educators and movement artists will explore the intersection of choreography, screendance, and video art as a means of expanding creative practice.
The use of video in dance has evolved beyond documentation and is now it’s own unique creative medium. In this digital age, choreographers must be fluent in the language of video in order to express ideas, connect with new audiences, market ourselves, and participate in the broader dance community.
Through hands-on exercises, discussions, and screenings, you will learn how dance transforms from three-dimensional spaces to two-dimensional screens. You will also gain an understanding of how to merge choreographing for the camera, and the choreography of the camera.
You will leave this course with a deeper understanding of both the possibilities and limitations of dance film, with the skills to take artistic risks while developing your own screendance choreographic voice.
Book Required: The Art of Making Dances by Doris Humphrey. Can be purchased .
